MCKINLEY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT EARNS NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLAR HONOR

Anne Baron Sheffield, a senior at McKinley High School, earned National Merit Scholar recognition for the 2014-15 school year. Students eligible for the award undergo a series of reviews that reduce the number of candidates from a total of 1.4 million students from across the nation to approximately 15,000 from which the winners are selected. A committee of high school counselors and college admissions officers select the scholars, based on their individual academic records, standardized test scores, school and community activities, and essays written by the students. National scholarship program announces 1,600 semifinalists

ADVOCATE STAFF REPORT Oct. 08, 2014 Evanston, Ill . — More than 1,600 black high school seniors were named Tuesday as semifinalists in the 51st annual National Achievement Scholarship Program. These students will compete for approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship awards worth about $2.5 million. The National Achievement Scholarship Program, a privately financed academic competition, was created in 1964 to recognize academically promising black students and provide scholarships to program participants. McKinley’s Daniel James When a football player like Daniel James says he loves to read books about sports, a certain image takes shape. The idea of the McKinley High lineman reading “The Blind Side” or “Friday Night Lights” seems logical.
